ESC, short for Electronic Speed Controller, is a device used to control motor speed. Based on motor type, ESCs can be divided into brushed and brushless categories. The ESC receives signals from the flight controller to start, stop, and control the motor, as well as to handle the switching of power transistors in the inverter bridge.

What Does an ESC Do in a Drone?

An ESC can be thought of as the mediator connecting different drone components, akin to how a brain controls the body. It performs essential and irreplaceable functions:

  1. Motor Speed Control: By receiving PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) signals, it converts input power into varying voltages for the motor, allowing it to achieve different speeds.
  2. Reversing Motor Direction: ESCs can change the direction of current, thereby reversing motor rotation.
